Abstract

Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disorder with an increasing prevalence. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is the most diagnosed type of diabetes. The ketogenic diet which is a therapeutic diet for epilepsy is popular and recommended to provide benefits in type 2 diabetes treatment. This review would focus on the influences of the ketogenic diet on the treatment and management of type 2 diabetes. Specifically, type 2 diabetic patients can achieve a loss of weight and a reduction in HbA1c levels when adhering to the ketogenic diet. However further studies about the long-term adherence to the ketogenic diet could be studied.
