Abstract
A computer with unique architecture is making previously unexplored techniques feasible for a wide range of applications, including image processing. The Array Processor provides very fast computing power, useful in both instrumentation systems and research. For ex-ample, two-dimensional Fast Fourier Transforms are now being performed on minicomputer systems enhanced by an Array Processor; 512 x 512 real data points are processed in approximately 1.6 seconds. This paper presents an overview of Array Processor hardware and soft ware in an examination of how this performance is achieved. It is designed to help scientists and engineers gain an appreciation of parallel processing and its potential.
