Abstract
A system of flexible beam expanders is presented which allows a complete control of the focal parameters of a high power laser beam such as the diameter of the focus and the focal position towards the focusing element, independent of the distance between laser and work station. The system is based on two optical systems each of them containing one adaptive copper mirror. The first system, the beam expander which is located close to the laser, allows the control of the beam diameter on the focusing optic. In the focusing optic itself the second adaptive mirror controls the focal position. The independent interaction of these adaptive elements allows the variation of the focus radius while the focal position can be changed nearly independently around the geometrical focus position. In order to evaluate the accuracy of the calculated beam propagation data the influence of apertures and of misaligned optical elements on the one hand and the effects of thermally induced deformations of the used optical elements on the other hand have to be considered with respect to the actually measured beam propagation properties.
