Abstract
The identification and tracking of mid-latitude weather systems in satellite imagery is explored using an automatic and objective technique based on Fourier Shape detectors. The method originating from medical image processing combines model-based information into a boundary-finding process for continuously deformable objects. In order to implement the method, a preliminary approach has been to test it on synthetic storms. In this paper we also present a first attempt on a real image of a mid-latitude storm that occurred over Scandinavia on the 15th December 1999. Further work will be to analyze IR and Visible daily composites since 1978 from the Advanced Very-High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) on the NOAA polar-orbiter satellite.
