Polymer optical fiber (POF) is attracting more and more attention in short distance communication system because of its advantages of low cost, low weight, easy alignment, and easy installation. The very narrow Gaussian laser beams from LDs have compatibility problems with POFs of large core diameter and high numerical aperture. This paper investigates the effect of light source injection conditions on the distributions of POF optical field using beam propagation method (BPM). It is found that appropriate offset launch technology could effectively alleviate the incompatibility. Also the mechanism of this technology improving the system bandwidth is explained.
