Abstract
China launched its own ocean color satellite HY-1A in May 2002. One of the onboard sensors COCTS has 10 channels including 8 visible and near-infrared bands for ocean color and 2 thermal infrared bands for sea surface temperature which has the advantage to estimate ocean primary production (OPP). In this paper first a satellite model of ocean primary production developed from in-situ data sets of China Sea was introduced with focus on the analysis of modeling vertical chlorophyll distribution and photosynthesis quantum yield. Second we test the reliability of this model with in situ data and compare it with other primary production models. Finally satellite-derived ocean primary production of China Sea was generated with HY-1A/COCTS data and the results show that COCTS data has a good capability to estimate ocean primary production in general.
