This chapter presents the fundamentals of optics, image formation, and performance metrics to help mechanical engineers improve their understanding of optical system terminology. In addition, the material is intended to help mechanical engineers better relate their mechanical designs and analyses, including the impact of environmental factors on the performance of optical systems.
