Abstract
This chapter addresses general issues that typically must be considered by the designer or engineer during the evolution of an optical instrument design. Subsequent chapters delve more deeply into specific design issues involving mounting prisms and small mirrors. In many cases, we include illustrative examples and descriptions of actual designs.
