The channel sharing efficiency in cell-loss conditions is important during the transmission of video signals over asynchronous transfer mode networks. Several possible approaches using two-layer video coding methods have been proposed, in which video information is transmitted over the network with different levels of protection with respect to cell loss. This paper proposes a two-layer coding method using a pyramid structure, in which several realizations are presented and their performance comparison is shown. To minimize the image quality degradation by cell loss, a cell-loss concealment method using a pyramid structure is proposed and its performance is compared with that of conventional methods.
