A novel optical time-division multiple-access (OTDMA) technique is introduced that can offer multirate data communications. The proposed multirate time-division multiplexing and demultiplexing can be implemented in the optical domain by using simple optical delay lines. The architectures for all-optical clock-rate multipliers are also presented. It is shown that the complexity of the proposed OTDMA network is almost the same as that of an equal-rate OTDMA network, but using our scheme can significantly improve the network flexibility.
