Profile Summary

He obtained his Ph.D. from Imperial College London in 1992 and conducted postdoctoral research at University College London (UCL) from 1993 to 1995. Since 2005, he has been a full professor at the University of Campinas (UNICAMP), where he has led the Applied and Computational Electromagnetics Laboratory (LEMAC) since 2000 (watch video: https://youtu.be/bx46ltj9Dok). He currently serves as the Dean of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (FEEC) at UNICAMP (2023-2027). His research primarily focuses on the development of semiconductor integrated devices for photonics, THz, and microwave frequencies, which have applications in radar systems, telecommunications infrastructure, and biotechnology advancements.

He has authored over 160 papers in reputable journals, chaired numerous international conferences, and delivered over one hundred invited talks worldwide. As a Co-Editor, he contributed to the books "Localized Waves: Theory and Applications" (Wiley and Sons, 2008) and "Non-Diffracting Waves" (Wiley-VCH, 2013). He served as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Photonics Journal (2011-2018) and the IEEE/OPTICA (formerly OSA) Journal of Lightwave Technology (2004-2009). Additionally, he was the Chief Guest Editor for the IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Quantum Electronics, overseeing the 2021 Special Issue on Photonic Antennas.

Recognized for his contributions, he was elected as a Fellow of OPTICA in 2011 and received the IEEE Third Millennium Medal in 2000. Since 2014, he has been a member of the Advisory Committee in Engineering at the prestigious São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP). He served as the Director of the National Institute of Science and Technology on Photonics for Optical Communication (FOTONICOM) from 2012 to 2017. Moreover, he is a co-founder of RADAZ (https://radaz.com.br), established in 2017, which manufactures and commercializes a groundbreaking product: the 3-Band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) system.
