Development of ASPICs for applications in sensing systems

Recent advances in integration technologies enable constructing novel, highly complex and miniaturized photonic systems for a large variety of applications. A constantly increasing interest can be observed in implementing application specific photonic integrated circuits (ASPICs) in a new generation of optical sensing systems. The InP platform allows to realize complete interrogators of sensing systems, comprising the light sources and photodetectors. An InP PIC can also be used as a sensing element itself. In this work we discuss the sensing systems addressing two different application fields, which can benefit from the recent developments of InP platforms - optical gyroscopes and interrogators of fiber Bragg gratings. The principle of work of optical gyroscope is based on the Sagnac effect. Two typical configurations can be identified – interferometric fiber-optic gyroscope (IFOG) and ring laser gyroscope (RLG). An integrated interrogator unit of an IFOG system presented here was realized using a DBR laser, passive couplers and PIN photodiodes. Characterization results have proven the possibility of detection of the Sagnac signal for the length of the fiber loop of 1 km. We also discuss monolithic single-frequency lasers, which were realized in the framework of the development of an integrated optical gyro. Also, the integrated interrogators of fiber Bragg gratings are presented and discussed. The investigated solutions are based on the interrogation scheme in which a broadband signal is coupled to a network of FBGs, and the reflected signals are analyzed using a spectrometer based on an arrayed waveguide grating. Several realized circuits are discussed with respect to their design, characterization results and potential for application in sensing systems. The first ruby laser, developed by Theodore Maiman in 1960 initiated the era of laser technology, characterized by rapid progress in all fields benefiting from unique features of coherent radiation sources. Among various types of lasers developed so far, fiber lasers plays continuously increasing role in those areas where high output powers and high efficiency combined with single mode operation and excellent heat dissipation are of concern. In the recent years, fiber laser-based systems dominated the market of material processing (cutting, welding, hardening, etc.) and military systems, while rare-earth doped fiber amplifiers became a key element of modern telecommunication systems. It should be noted, however, that despite a large number of fiber lasers manufacturers around the world, there are only a few companies with technological skills enabling manufacturing the active fibers of sufficient quality. In this work we would like to show the progress of Polish research teams in this field. The R&D works, conducted for the last few years in cooperation with Laboratory of Fiber Optic Technology at the Faculty of Chemistry of Maria Curie-Skłodowska University, Lublin, Poland, enabled mastering the technology of manufacturing the first active optical fibers applicable to laser systems. In this work the overview of the technology will be presented together with the results of characterization of ytterbium, erbium, thulium and dysprosium doped optical fibers, dedicated to laser applications. The absorption/emission spectra and luminescence kinetics profiles of active preforms and optical fibers will be discussed and compared to the results obtained for commercially available samples. Also the results of amplification and laser experiments will be presented and perspectives of the active fiber technology in Poland will be discussed. Increasing demand for high data transmission rates and bandwidth availability driven by the rapid development of the broadband services becomes challenging in the context of constraints imposed by nowadays exploited telecommunication optical fibers. Based on single-mode fibers and multiplexing in the wavelength domain (wavelength division multiplexing, WDM), the current technology seems to have reached its fundamental limits. At present, two promising technologies are a subject of intensive research. One of them is the increase of the data transmission through multiplying the number of fiber cores, thus implementing the concept of Multi-Core Fibers (MCF), where each core is used as a separate data transmission channel. The second widely investigated technique is based on the idea of mode division multiplexing (MDM), where different transverse modes of a Few-Mode Fiber (FMF) can be used as different carriers for data channels. In this work, we demonstrate the results of R&D works and the comprehensive tests of the few-mode fibers developed within the project NMKM+. Developed few-mode fibers (both passive and active) and their commercially available counterparts have been tested with respect of transmission parameters and applicability to the real telecom systems. In particular, guided mode profiles, numerical apertures, OTDR, and dispersion characteristics for the passive fibers have been recorded and compared. Also, methods of selective excitation and detection of singular modes have been discussed and partially verified. The results of data transmission experiments have been performed and discussed with respect to the quality of transmitted signals. These have been complemented by the amplification experiments with the use of erbium-doped few-mode fibers in “classical” and microstructural geometry. The results were studied and analyzed, showing the potential for future optimization. Video-based heart rate estimation based on the PPG technique is a remote optical technique allowing to determine the heart rate and breath rate through the intensity or motion variations. This paper proposes a new monitoring method for simultaneous estimation of heart and breathing rates using an active 3D system with structured light. Active 3D imaging systems capture information about 3D object shapes using artificial illumination. An active 3D imaging system can be realized using different techniques: time-of-flight, triangulation, motion flow, interferometry. In this work, we investigate triangulation-based systems. Heart and respiration rates are signals analyzed in proposed systems as crucial vital signs from a medical point of view. Furthermore, the type of respiration is also analyzed with separation between abdominal and torso type. The quality of breathing signals received from various optical systems is also compared. This system is based on different approaches to 3D imaging and includes random light pattern, fridge light pattern and active stereo methods. In the light pattern systems, the movements of the chest and abdominal are associated with breathing and are observed by the video camera as the light pattern deformation. The system based on active stereo method provides the depth map by which the breath signal is extracted. Further analysis of received signals is based on Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The proposed remote optical technique extracts the blood pulse from an image captured by a vision system. Patient’s face is detected with use of dedicated convolutional neural network for robust face alignment. Based on found features points, a few regions of interest are selected, and then their results are compared. Mean pixel values for three color channels (red, green, blue) are calculated. Active 3D imaging technique enables stabilization and quality improvement of the captured image. Not correlated groups of pixels are eliminated. Then cluster analysis is used on the grounds of multi-features. Measurement data are detrended by empirical mode decomposition EEMD. Subsequently, ICA was applied to recover source signals from the observations. Maximum frequency pick in the FFT spectrum determines HR. The performance of the proposed system was tested through a series of experiments. Vital signs of 10 persons with reference signals have been detected. Both, breath and heart rates estimates were found to be accurate. The proposed system can be used as a component of more complex medical systems where information about the condition of the examined patient is crucial or important.

The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique is a powerful diagnostic tool which is nowadays commonly used in many fields of medicine. In some cases, especially of the patients of intensive care units, it is highly recommended or even necessary to provide continuous monitoring of basic physiologic parameters, mainly the heart rate and the respiratory rate, during the MRI scan procedure. The presence of a strong magnetic field within the MRI chamber requires application of non-standard devices and solutions. The monitoring system needs to be immune to the strong magnetic field and simultaneously cannot negatively influence on the results of the scan. Therefore, application of optical sensing technologies could be potentially advantageous to fulfil these requirements. In this work we propose a novel optoelectronic measurement system, dedicated to monitoring of the patient during an MRI scan, immune to strong magnetic field and compatible with the MRI apparatus. Fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) are used as the sensing elements – the strain induced by the patient’s respiration and cardiac activity cause a change of the Bragg wavelength. These changes can be accurately measured and monitored in the time domain. The respiratory and heart rate can be extracted by further processing of the measured signal by dedicated software. The gratings are organized in a network to maximize the effective sensing area. Each of the FBGs has a different Bragg wavelength so that they can be connected in series. The information from the sensors is read out using an interrogator based on an application specific photonic integrated circuit (ASPIC), designed and fabricated in an InP-based generic integration technology. The interrogator comprises a 36-channel arrayed waveguide grating wavelength demultiplexer, which outputs are connected to PIN photodiodes. Such a photonic circuit acts as a spectrometer and allows to reconstruct the reflection spectrum of many gratings simultaneously. An external superluminescent LED is used as the light source, however in the target configuration the source could be monolithically integrated with the interrogator. The Bragg gratings, the interrogator and the SLED are connected with each other using an optical circulator. Initial tests of the monitoring system have been performed using a single fiber Bragg grating as the strain sensor and a commercially available optoelectronic interrogator. The fiber with an inscribed FBG was mounted using an epoxy glue on a PMMA board and deployed under the patient. Two signals can be distinguished out of the measured waves. The first one, with strong and slowly-varying peaks, reflects the respiration of the patient. The second signal, characterized by low-intensity and fast-varying peaks is a result of the cardiac activity. No influence of the magnetic field of the MRI instrument on the sensing system has been observed. The first results have confirmed both the correctness of the approach and the applicability of the system to monitoring the patient’s physical condition during MRI diagnosis. Continuous demand for compact and efficient laser sources, specifically those operating in short-wavelength spectral range, have resulted in dynamic development of both semiconductor and diode pumped solid state lasers. Undoubtedly, semiconductor lasers are presently the most intensively investigated field of active materials and a number of impressive results has been achieved, including violet GaN laser diodes. Nevertheless, solid state lasers are constantly considered as irreplaceable in all applications requiring excellent optical parameters of the beam together with high power levels. The short-wavelength emission and lasing in solid state lasers is typically obtained via harmonic generation or up-conversion phenomena. The latter method, involving either stepwise absorption of photons or energy transfer processes, is specifically applicable to fiber geometry, where high intensity of radiation and waveguiding effect guarantee high up-conversion efficiency. Trivalent thulium is the activator ion, which energy structure in certain conditions specifically favours a multi-photon or multi-ion pumping mechanisms resulting in emission within the UV-VIS part of spectrum. In low phonon glasses and fibers, luminescence from 1G4 (480 nm), 1D2 (455 nm), as well as 1I6 (287 nm) has been reported, typically involving ESA-type consecutive absorptions of 650 nm photons (3H6→3F2+3F3, 3F4→1G4, 3H4→1D2, 1G4→3PJ) [1]. UV-VIS emission has been also observed under multi-wavelength pumping at 1112 nm, 1116 nm and 1127 nm [2]. Several years ago laser action at 287 nm in Tm3+:ZBLAN fiber was obtained under consecutive ESA of 1064 nm delivered by an Nd3+:YAG laser [3] – which is to date the shortest wavelength of stimulated emission generated in an optical fiber. Laser experiments with thulium-activated fluoride fibers, however very promising, were all severely hindered by photodarkening effects accompanying excitation of UV-violet radiation in the fibers. In this work we present our latest results on UV emission properties of bulk ZBLAN glasses doped with thulium and co-doped with ytterbium ions in different concentrations. In particular, we carefully examined the absorption characteristics, as well as concentration-dependant spectra of UV emission from the 1I6 and 1D2 levels obtained under direct and up-conversion excitation. The fluorescence dynamics profiles, recorded for all concentrations, together with excitation spectra enabled discussion of mechanisms responsible for upper levels populating. Moreover, the multi-ion processes resulting in non-radiative depopulation of excited states have been carefully examined and appropriate cross-relaxation rates have been determined, giving further impact to better understanding of the short wavelength optical properties of the investigated system.
