Optical design landscape is rapidly changing influenced by shrinking dimensions of contemporary light sources, light propagation media and receptor sizes. Emerging light sources in form of laser diodes or LEDs, and frequent use of optical fibers, planar waveguides and microscopic size of solid state crystals, require more refined optical system design than single lenses offer. While preserving basic postulates of geometrical optical system design we show how modern optical devices could benefit from microlens optical system design.
