Abstract
Object Raku’s Tree Species Identifier (TSI) is a multi-faceted and automated process that analyzes LiDAR point cloud data to determine the location and species of individual trees. TSI is a system designed to readily incorporate any tree species and the code was written to enable an almost limitless species catalog. TSI provides stem-based information and has been tested & validated on over 2,000,000 hectares of timber area and has segmented over 650 million trees. TSI outputs adhere to standard GIS specifications and so can be easily integrated into existing GIS networks and applications. TSI requires LiDAR data with point density exceeding 10 pts/m2 and does not require correlated imagery or other remote sensing data. In this paper we describe the process and highlight the challenges and results from an operational case study.
