Abstract
Motors are traditional actuators for rotating motion. With the availability of vacuum and cryogenic adapted stepper motors, they are now offering a fully safe and reliable solution even at cryogenic temperature. Unfortunately, inside an instrument not all positionings can be solved by rotation motion. A number of components needs to be translated with more or less accuracy. Simple solutions using an eccentric or a cam offer only restricted motion range. This paper study one of the most common solutions used to transform a rotation motion in a translation one: the screw. It reports the use of a planetary roller screw which has also been used in various InfraRed instruments at cryogenic temperature.
