Abstract
With the high impact on people’s daily life and performance of sports activities, a lateral ankle sprain is being noticed more by physical therapists. This article talks about the anatomy and function of ankle ligaments, the symptoms of lateral ankle sprain, and the treatments of lateral ankle sprain. The lateral Ankle is composed of three ligaments: the ATFL, the CFL, and the PTFL. The symptoms of the lateral ankle can be both physical and mental. There are three degrees of lateral ankle sprain according to the severity. There are also some corresponding treatments for both impacts. The RICE treatment and ankle muscle strengthening are the most efficient way to get recovered. Patient with lateral ankle sprain has great fear to use their ankle after injury. Helping patients overcome the fear of ankles again is one challenge for physical therapists. They can build confidence by building muscle strength and wearing braces. There is no official guide to treating the psychological impacts, but physical therapists should emphasize the importance of ankle stability and get patients a strong feeling of support in their ankles. Choosing the right treatment methods is very important for lateral ankle sprain.
