Abstract
We demonstrate a dual-wavelength pulsed mid-infrared (MIR) optical parametric oscillator (OPO) with flexible temporalspectral operation capability. The OPO was pumped with a fiber master-oscillator power-amplifier (MOPA) incorporating an acousto-optic tunable filter (AOTF) in the seed oscillator. Composite wave packets were generated to drive the AOTF with adjustable carrier frequencies, amplitudes, packet lengths, and inter-packet periods, enabling flexible temporalspectral manipulation of the seed laser in central wavelengths, spectral intensities, pulse profiles, and repetition rates, respectively. This versatile laser was employed to pump the OPO after power amplification and the temporal-spectral characteristics were transferred to the MIR in the nonlinear processes. Two typical pulsed dual-wavelength operation modes, namely, simultaneous and alternate dual-wavelength pulsation modes, were experimentally studied for the pump MOPA and the related OPO. Equivalent spectral intensities were obtained for the two MIR idler wavelengths under both operation modes with careful drive signal adjustment for the AOTF. It is believed that our design has paved a promising approach towards the construction of versatile pulsed MIR sources with flexible temporal-spectral operation modes, serving practical applications such as differential absorption lidar and terahertz wave generation.
