Abstract
Often the direct experimental analysis of deformation fields on crack specimens is a necessary tool accompanying the application of modern fracture mechanics concepts. A speckle photographic technique for the measurement of in-plane displacement fields and respective elements of the distortion tensor on crack specimen surfaces has been developed which includes automatic specklegram evaluation by means of digital image processing. Short Q-switch pulses of a ruby laser permit to freeze specklegrams from solid state waves travelling through crack specimens. Mode I crack opening strain fields on impact loaded specimens have been measured and compared with theoretic results.
