Abstract
An experimental and theoretical investigation is reported on competition between the forward and back- ward emission in an optically pumped far infrared ring laser. A ring laser operating on CH3OH 119pm experiences instantaneous switching in emission direction in either case of (a) the CO2 frequency tuned across the line center of the it transition or (b) the fir cavity tuned across the fir line center (see Rel[1]). A mode competition model based on the two-mode laser theory is presented for the direction preference of the fir emission.
