Abstract
Resource managers are turning toward digital information systems for help in making decisions on the disposition of the resources in their care. Airborne remote sensing technologies have proven to be a cost effective method of providing timely information. Unfortunately, the digital airborne technologies that are currently in use are not widely available, are expensive, and of limited spatial resolution. A practical solution to the problem of providing information in digital form is to use widely available commercial technologies: digitized video, digitized still video, digital still cameras, Kodak Photo CD, and digitized photography. This paper examines and compares the quality, cost effectiveness and practicality of the use of the digital imagery acquired by these systems as it relates to the utility in resource management activities. The conclusions drawn show how applications dictate the minimum quality requirements and therefore the technology chosen.
