Abstract
Electrical utilities use sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) as an electrical insulator in many components of their power systems. Under normal conditions SF6 is stable, but in electrical discharges SF6 decomposes into many byproducts. With an FT-IR spectrometer and a 20-m cell, we have examined the byproducts from various discharges and obtained quantitative analyses of components down to 1 ppm (part per million) or less. We discuss the advantages and disadvantages of FT-IR spectroscopy relative to other techniques for diagnosing the insulating gas condition inside electrical power equipment.
