Abstract
The main problem of reconstructing objects from stereoscopic images is finding corresponding points in the two images. We reduce ambiguity significantly during the 3D reconstruction by a new feature called tangential points that can be easily computed. Tangential points in the 3D space can serve as starting points for an iterative 3D reconstruction of the whole object. They are defined in the following way. Each pair of stereo images defines a set of epipolar planes. These are planes which are mapped to lines in both images. A tangential point is a point on a center line (in particular of a blood vessel) where the line is tangent to an epipolar plane. Tangential points are projected to points where the projected lines are also tangent to the epipolar lines. The described technique has been tested on a hose model and on real cerebral x-ray images where it is able to detect the majority of tangential points. We demonstrate our tool in the 3D reconstruction of blood vessels from cerebral digital subtraction angiographic images.
