Abstract
Recognition of three-dimensional (3-D) elastic volumes is a computationally expensive process since it is performed involving not only the entire object and model surfaces but also their deformed versions. This paper describes a computationally inexpensive matching method for elastic volumes using only their cross-sections. In the proposed algorithm, it is assumed that object and model surfaces of unit volume are standing on the x-y base plane and scanned along the z-axis parallel to the x-y base plane. The resultant slices are represented by a stack of pictures with the values 1 and 0 corresponding to object and background areas. The object regions in these images are translated to the origin of the x-y plane and their major and minor axes are aligned with the x and y coordinate axes. The object region boundaries are detected by a set of simple 0-to-1 and 1-to-0 transition templates. The gradient vector is computed along the boundary points and matching is performed in the direction of the gradient vectors by computing the Euclidean distance between the object boundary points and the corresponding points in the model cross section boundary. The distances measured in various slices are averaged and the minimum average distance is used to identify the model best matching to the object being processed. The method is tested using computer generated surfaces of undeformed shapes with successful matching results.
