Abstract
Starting from viewpoint of optical losses the electro-optic effect of TN and smectic A displays are analyzed. It has been found that the general optical leakage arises due to the fringe distortion. The fringe distortions form as an inevitable result of a spatially nonuniform fields, the pixel electrode structure and the matrix addressing. The lateral field existing in the On state of a liquid crystal display (LCD) can result in an undesired light-scattering domain in each pixel and lead to poor contrast ratio of the display. The shape, the boundary and the localization of the director distortion areas of SA LCD have been known experimentally. The total leakages increase for high- information-content LCD. The optical leakages are found to depend on the 'own' memory of SA-medium.
