30 July 1998 Visual feedback enhancement for telerobotics applications

Abstract
Visual feedback in one of the main sensory channels in telepresence, teleoperation and telerobotics applications. Most of time this channel is passive, i.e., video image of the remote scene is displayed as is or, sometimes 'augmented.' This fact leads to some limitations, in particular, the operator must keep attention to interpret the whole image and extract the relevant information to react. The critical resource here (the operator's attention) is badly used and the corresponding time must be used to improve the tele-tasks. In this paper we present a new approach to help the operator to detect some remote events and discharge him from some low level information process. In addition, this approach enables the use of small bandwidth communication channel (the equivalent problem in the frequency space). The developed method is based on image motion analysis. This information provides the ability to extract unexpected events and display this volume reduced information to the operator. Some results of this approach and discussions are presented.
