Abstract
The detection of explosives concealed in checked luggage is an important security concern of the airline industry. One approach to explosives detection is to obtain a digital radiograph of the checked luggage and utilize pattern recognition techniques to identify suspicious objects. We have developed a pattern recognition methodology which addresses one major category of explosives threat : packaged high explosives. The algorithm being developed uses an optimization technique in the frequency domain to decompose a trace across a digital radiograph of the checked luggage into two components : the background and the potential packaged explosives. The decomposition makes use of the information inherent in the size, shape, density of individual stick of the packaged high explosives as well as the contiguous configuration of the package.
