Abstract
This paper addresses the issue of the detection and classification of buried objects in shallow and very shallow water. A new 3D high resolution sonar technique is presented. A specific suspension and tracking sonar frame has been designed with the constraint to be close of a future real operational configuration. This equipment has been deployed first in a pool and then at sea; it was mounted 2 meters above rough sand sea floor where objects and rocks were buried. The detection and classification of objects have been successfully demonstrated up to half a meter sediment burial. This paper presents these preliminary results and shows the technique interest for mine hunting operations, buried cable inspection, archeology researches etc.
