Abstract
The rapidly growing use of multichannel detectors in the design of analytical instruments has lead to the development of concave holographic gratings which produce a flat spectrum. These gratings are corrected from aberrations, mainly astigmatism, and are blazed for improving the signal. Spectroscopic instruments are subject to two forms of stray-light - diffuse scatter from the grating, a problem that can be significantly reduced by using holographic gratings and multireflections that may include the grating. This problem may be solved by calculating an aberration corrected grating that operates "off plane" and is, in fact, tilted. This paper describes the effect of these improvements for optimizing signal to noise ratio of flat field spectrographs.
