Abstract
Otitis media (ot-ear, itis-inflammation, media-middle ear) is one of the most common illnesses diagnosed in children. Globally, with an incidence of over 709 million, it is the most common reason for administering antibiotics to children. Furthermore, an inaccurate diagnosis related to conditions with similar symptoms frequently leads to the over-prescription of antibiotics, contributing to an increase in bacterial resistance development. In the United States, at least 80% of children will have experienced one or more otitis media (OM) episodes by 3 years of age. Pediatric acute OM accounts for approximately US$4 billion in added health care expenses in the U.S.
