Basic Hardware Architecture

Abstract
The computer hardware has significant impact on the execution speed of a program and thus the response time of a system. In real-time systems, understanding the architecture promotes the efficient use of all resources. Although the role of current language theory is to isolate the programmer from the underlying hardware, those who have implemented practical realtime systems realize that this is impossible - if not at the design stage, certainly at the hardware/software integration stages. In this chapter we review those aspects of computer architecture that must be directly considered in the design of real-time software.
