The enhancement of a laser speckle photography technique by means of a modification of the film development procedure is presented. Using a holographic film, an amplitude specklegram can be changed to a phase specklegram. This conversion is achieved during the film development procedure by a controlled bleaching of the exposed film. The contrast and visibility of Young’s fringes reconstructed from a phase specklegram are better than those from an amplitude specklegram. The diffraction efficiency of a phase specklegram is greater than that of an amplitude specklegram. The experimental arrangement and the method to get a phase specklegram are described. The phase specklegram characteristics are presented in detail and experimental results are discussed.
