Abstract
The performance of lensless free-space optical interconnects (FSOIs) for chip-to-chip interconnections under different misalignment conditions is analyzed. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is derived as a function of transverse misalignment, longitudinal misalignment, angular misalignment, source and detector pitch, detector size, beam waist, and interconnect distance and used as the performance measure. We show that the fill factor of the detectors and the beam waist of the source can be used as optimization parameters for maximum misalignment tolerance. A FSOI with optimum misalignment tolerance may not have the highest possible SNR, but it can tolerate greater misalignment without a substantial decrease in SNR.
