Abstract
Observation from a stratospheric balloon are unobstructed by the atmosphere which is opaque at submillimeter wavelenghts from the ground. For this reason, a Submillimeter Heterodyne Spectrometer has been developed for the balloon-borne PRONAOS project to provide a very high spectral resolution and to detect simultaneously the 368 GHz 02 and the 380 GHz H2O lines in the interstellar medium. A Superconductor-Insulator-Superconductor (SIS) receiver using all-refractory Niobium junctions has been chosen for this experiment because of its low Local Oscillator power requirement and low noise temperature. This project is under the responsability of the french space agency : the CNES (Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales, Toulouse).
