Abstract
A proposed optical multiresolution preprocessor allows faster reading and processing of video data than a conventional camera when only a small part of an image is of interest. The processor allows an image to be mapped at low resolution to a sensor array to determine the region of interest. An optical mask is set to select only the region of interest. This region is now read to another sensor array. A diffractive optical element, DOE, is designed that maps both the full image and the region to the sensor arrays. The DOE is constructed from overlapping and translated zone plates that focus light off axis to the appropriate sensor elements. The equations are derived for the zone plates and for the field intensities at the output. In one configuration for handling white light, an optically addressable liquid crystal light valve converts the input image to a single wavelength for the DOE. A second configuration is discussed briefly in which the DOE structure is converted to a three color 3D one. The limitations of the approaches are discussed.
