SC502: High Dynamic Range Coronagraphy
Space-based coronagraphy has become a key area of high dynamic range astronomy. With the advent of effective ground-based adaptive optics (AO) systems, ground-based diffraction-limited coronagraphy has also become a scientifically exciting endeavor. This course will cover the fundamental principles of Lyot and phase-mask coronagraphs from the viewpoint of Fourier optics, and consider their use in space, as well as on existing and future ground-based AO telescopes. The aim of this course is to provide a sound theoretical and practical understanding of the necessary components of a high-contrast coronagraph.
