Ultrasound damage detection using built-in piezoelectric transducers is a promising technique because it can automatically inspect and interrogate structural damage in hard to access areas. Although numerous efforts have been devoted to the application of the structural health monitoring (SHM) concepts to real world problems; there is a shortage in the modeling tools specifically tailored for rapid computer aided design of SHM applications. This is due to the fact that the finite element method, which is the dominant method in the simulation of the wave propagation problems due to its geometric versatility and the capability to simulate complex boundary conditions as well as coupling effects, lacks the required computational efficiency for the structural health monitoring applications. This is because of the high frequencies usually utilized is SHM, posing a huge burden on the mesh size to minimize the errors. Spectral element method (SEM), a variant of the p/FEM, combines the fast convergence rates associated with the spectral methods with the geometric flexibility of the finite element method, thus allowing for more computationally efficient simulation, leading to fast product design cycle. Recently, these advantages have drawn the attention of the different researchers in the field of the SHM. The advantage of the SEM as a high accuracy solution method enables the refinement and the testing of different concepts of SHM. One of these concepts is the main focus of the current paper. The presented work is a parametric study of the effect of the piezoceramic actuator thickness on the fundamental Lamb waves S₀, and A₀ using a tailored SEM solver. In order to illustrate the reduction of the computational costs the running times of the SEM solver were compared with the running times for some of cases solved using commercial FEM solver (ANSYS), as well as the results are compared with analytical results based on a widely accepted model from the literature. Additionally, the cases were validated experimentally, showing a good agreement with the simulation results.

The use of time reversal methods for localization and characterization of damages in plates is usually combined with high frequency guided waves in a local elastic wave propagation formulation. In such a situation, pulses and echos may be clearly separated in time. As a consequence, the diffracted field on a damage with large geometrical dimensions compared to the wavelength used for wave propagation allows to consider the structure itself as "near infinite" because the modal behavior is not apparent. However, those high requencies may not be required and in the presented approach, medium frequencies are used and boundary conditions need to be considered. The interest of this frequency range is in using lightweight signal processing devices limited to low data transfer rates as expected for in flight fuselage skin inspections. It also allows to filter artifacts like very small damages in the structure. This study focuses on the case of wavelengths which are in the order of the largest geometrical dimension of the cracks. In the paper, a modelling tool is first extended to describe the vibration behavior of pristine and damaged finite thin plates in the low and medium frequency range below 50 kHz. The proposed analytical model employs a Hierarchical Trigonometric Functions Set (HTFS) to characterize homogeneous plates with through cracks. To approximate the effect of a small crack in a plate for all combinations of classical boundary conditions, high order approximation functions are required. The proposed approach takes the advantage of the stability of the HTFS for these high orders. A notable advantage of this model is that it does not require a dense uniform meshing of the plate, with a minimum of 10 nodes per wavelength, as most finite element models require. The time reversal concept introduced before is thus validated with this model for a finite plate with known boundary conditions. Experimental validation of the model is conducted in the time domain for pristine and cracked plate structures and shows great potential for crack detection.
