Peter Van Daele received the degree of Electrical Engineering at Ghent University in Belgium in 1984 and in 1988 a PhD also in Electrical Engineering at Ghent University. Between 1984 and 1987 he worked at the Department of Information Technology (INTEC) of Ghent University in the field of integrated optoelectronic devices. From 1988 he is a permanent member of staff from IMEC (Interuniversity MicroElectronics Center). In this position he has been responsible for the processing, fabrication and research on III-V optoelectronic and integrated photonic devices moving to optical packaging and interconnections as part of Centre for MicroSystems Technology (CMST).
Since 2002 he became involved in issues related to Optical networks and Broadband Technology and Broadband deployment as project coordinator for the European FP6-Coordination action “BREAD”. Since its establishment, Peter Van Daele has also become involved in the IBBT, the Interdisciplinary Institute for BroadBand Technology (www.ibbt.be) and serves as project coordinator for the FP7 European Network of Excellence “BONE” (Building the Future Optical Network in Europe).
Since April 1st 1993, Peter Van Daele is part time professor at the Ghent University and was appointed Assistant Secretary General of the International Union of Radio Science (URSI) from 1993 until 2001 and again since 2008. Peter Van Daele is author or co-author of over 400 publications and presentations in international journals or at international conferences.
Peter Van Daele is involved in the organization of some major conferences in the field, such as ECOC (European Conference on Optical Communications) as a member of the European Management Committee and General Chair for ECOC 2008 and ECOC 2012, SPIE Photonics Europe 2008 & 2010 as member of the SPIE European Advisory Committee and he initiated in 2004 the yearly event “BBEurope” (Broadband Europe), bringing together all players involved in Broadband for All.
