Region counting is a conception in computer graphics and image analysis, and it has many applications in medical area
recently. The existing region-counting algorithms are almost based on filling method. Although filling algorithm has
been improved well, the speed of these algorithms used to count regions is not satisfied. A region counting algorithm
based on region labeling automaton is proposed in this paper. By tracing the boundaries of the regions, the number of the
region can be obtained fast. And the proposed method was found to be fastest and requiring less memory.
