The invisibility behavior of initiation and growing a delamination in an aerospace structure makes it one of the most dangerous and catastrophic damages. In this paper, the non-destructive testing (NDT) and structural health monitoring (SHM) techniques were used to visualize and quantify three different sizes of simulated delaminations inserted in a crossply CFRP plate. An experiment of using RollerFORM and OmniScan equipment was conducted to verify and visualize three simulated delaminations. The guided waves-based developed imaging methods with a sufficient network of piezoelectric wafer active sensors was performed to quantify the shape and size of simulated delaminations. The groupvelocity directivity plots were determined based on the mechanical properties of the interested specimen to estimate the group velocity values of incident and scattered waves. A simple method was developed to estimate the group velocity values of incident and scattered waves at each point of interested area based on the group-velocity directivity plots of propagating Lamb modes and the coordinates of transmitter and receiver transducers. The results demonstrate the capability of the developed imaging method for quantifying the size and shape of interested delaminations. The interaction of guided waves with delaminations were visualized experimentally using scanning laser Doppler vibrometer (SLDV). The effect of the delamination severity on the trapped waves generated over the delamination region was studied experimentally. It was found that delamination size can affect trapped waves. The large delamination has strong trapped waves compared with the small delamination which has weak trapped waves. The wavenumber analysis was conducted for the experimental wavefield data to study the effect of delamination severity on wavenumber components and to identify the delaminations. The result showed that new wavenumber components can affected by the delamination severity. The significant new wavenumber components due to strong trapped waves can be observed for the large delamination case.

Due to the extensive use of composite materials in aerospace structures, they are highly susceptible to various types of damage including barely visible impact damage (BVID) due to low-velocity impact events such as bird strikes and runway debris. Implementation of guided-wave based structural health monitoring (SHM) for BVID detection in composites has been extremely challenging due to the anisotropic nature of composites and the complex wave-damage interaction with impact damage. This paper presents a new methodology for the detection of BVID in composites using selectively pure shear horizontal (SH) guided wave mode generated by angle beam transducers (ABT) and received by phased array transducers (PAT). In this methodology, pure SH0 wave excitation was achieved using the angle beam transducers and variable angle wedges and after propagation in the composite it was received by the phased array transducer. First, the semi-analytical finite element (SAFE) method was used to generate the guided wave dispersion curves and the corresponding tuning angle for the SH0 mode excitation was obtained based on Snell’s law. Then, pitch-catch experiments using the ABT-PAT transducer pair were conducted to validate the pure SH0 mode excitation. After this, impact damage experiments were conducted on multiple quasi-isotropic carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite plates having different thicknesses by conforming to the ASTM D7136 standard to generate controlled impact damage size of 1". Next, impact damage detection experiments using pure SH0 mode at 500 kHz, were conducted using the ABT-PAT transducer pair. It was observed that pure SH0 mode was sensitive to the impact damage as a significant decrease in the signal amplitude and mode conversion was observed. With our experiments, we demonstrated the validity and usefulness of this technique for impact damage detection in composite structures. An invention disclosure describing the use of angle beam transducers for SH wave excitation method has been filed and is in the process of becoming a provisional patent.

There is considerable demand for structural health monitoring (SHM) at locations where there are substantial radiation fields such as nuclear reactor components, dry cask storage canister, irradiated fuel assemblies, etc. Piezoelectric wafer active sensors (PWAS) have been emerged as one of the major SHM sensing technologies. In order to use PWAS to perform SHM in nuclear environment, radiation influence on sensor and sensing capability needs to be investigated to assure the reliability of the PWAS based method. Radiation may cause degradation or even complete failure of sensors. Gamma radiation is one of the major radiation sources near the nuclear source. Therefore, experimental investigation was completed on the gamma radiation endurance of piezoelectric sensors. The irradiation test was done in a Co-60 Gamma Irradiator. Lead Zirconate Titanate (PZT) and Gallium Orthophosphate (GaPO4) PWAS were exposed under gamma radiation at 100 Gy/hr rate for 20 hours. Electro-mechanical (E/M) admittance signatures and electrical capacitance were measured to evaluate the PWAS performance before and after every 4 hours exposure to gamma radiation. PWAS were kept at room temperature for 6 days after each 4 hours radiation exposure to investigate the effect of time on PWAS by gamma radiation. It was found that, PZT-PWAS show variation in resonance frequency for both in plane and thickness mode E/M admittance. Where, the changes in resonance amplitudes are larger for PZT-PWAS. GaPO4-PWAS E/M impedance/admittance spectra don’t show any reasonable change after gamma irradiation. A degradation behavior of electrical properties in the PZT-PWAS was observed. Capacitance value of PZT-PWAS decreases from 3.2 nF to 3.07 nF after exposing to gamma radiation for 20 hours at 100Gy/hour. This degradation behavior of electrical properties may be explained by the pinning of domain walls by some radiation induced effect. GaPO4-PWAS doesn’t show reasonable degradation in electrical properties. GaPO4 has good radiation endurance, although amplitude sensitivity is relatively low.

This paper presents a set of numerical and experimental results on the use of guided waves for structural health monitoring (SHM) of crack growth during a fatigue test in a thick steel plate used for civil engineering application. The capability of embedded piezoelectric wafer active sensors (PWAS) to perform in situ nondestructive evaluation (NDE) is explored. Numerical simulation and experimental tests are used to prove that PWAS can perform active SHM using guided wave pitch-catch method and passive SHM using acoustic emission (AE). Multi-physics finite element (MPFEM) codes are used to simulate the transmission and reception of guided waves in a 1-mm plate and their diffraction by a through hole. The MP-FEM approach permitted that the input and output variables be expressed directly in electric terms while the two-ways electromechanical conversion was done internally in the MP-FEM formulation. The analysis was repeated for several hole sizes and a damage index performances was tested. AE simulation was performed with the MP-FEM approach in a 13-mm plate in the shape of the compact tension (CT) fracture mechanics specimen. The AE event was simulated as a pulse of defined duration and amplitude. The electrical signal measured at a receiver PWAS was simulated. Daubechies wavelet transform was used to process the signal and identify its Lamb modes and FFT frequency contents. Experimental tests were performed with PWAS transducers acting as passive receivers of AE signals. The 8-mm thick flange of an I beam was instrumented on one side with PWAS transducers and on the other side with conventional AE transducers (PAC R15I) acting as comparison witnesses. An AE source was simulated using 0.5- mm pencil lead breaks; the PWAS transducers were able to pick up AE signal with good strength. Subsequently, PWAS transducers and R15I sensors were applied to a 13-mm CT specimen subjected to accelerated fatigue testing. The PWAS and R15I transducers signals were collected with PAC data acquisition system using the AE-win software. Comparative results of AE hits and source localization from the PWAS and R15I sensors are given. Active sensing in pitch catch mode was applied between the PWAS transducers installed on the CT specimen and damage indexes were calculated and correlated with physical crack growth as measured optically. The paper finishes with summary, conclusion, and suggestions for further work.

This paper presents a systematic investigation of power and energy transduction in piezoelectric wafer active sensors (PWAS) for structural health monitoring (SHM). After a literature review of the state of the art, the paper develops a simplified pitch-catch model of power and energy transduction of PWAS attached to structure. The model assumptions include: (a) 1-D axial and flexural wave propagation; (b) ideal bonding (pin-force) connection between PWAS and structure; (c) ideal excitation source at the transmitter PWAS and fully-resistive external load at the receiver PWAS. Frequency response functions are developed for voltage, current, complex power, active power, etc. First, we examined PWAS transmitter and determined the active power, reactive power, power rating of electrical requirement under harmonic voltage excitation. It was found that the reactive power is dominant and defines the power requirement for power supply / amplifier for PWAS applications. The electrical and mechanical power analysis at the PWAS structure interface indicates all the active electrical power provides the mechanical power at the interface. This provides the power and energy for the axial and flexural waves power and energy that propagate into the structure. The sum of forward and backward wave power equals the mechanical power PWAS applied to the structure. The parametric study of PWAS transmitter size shows the proper size and excitation frequency selection based on the tuning effects. Second, we studied the PWAS receiver structural interface acoustic and electrical energy transduction. The parametric study of receiver size, receiver impedance and external electrical load gives the PWAS design guideline for PWAS sensing and power harvesting applications. Finally we considered the power flow for a complete pitch-catch setup. In pitch-catch mode, the power flows from electrical source into piezoelectric power at the transmitter; the piezoelectric conduction converts the electrical power into the mechanical interface power at the transmitter PWAS and then into the acoustic wave power travelling in the structure. The wave power arrives at the receiver PWAS and is captured at the mechanical interface between the receiver PWAS and the structure; the captured mechanical power is converted back into electrical power at the receiver PWAS and measured by the receiver electrical instrument. Our numerical simulation and graphical chart show the trends in the power and energy flow behavior with remarkable peaks and valleys that can be exploited for optimum design.

Crack detection with piezoelectric wafer active sensors (PWAS) is emerging as an effective and powerful technique in structural health monitoring (SHM). Modeling and simulation of PWAS and host structure play an important role in the SHM applications with PWAS. For decades finite element method has been extensively applied in the analysis of piezoelectric materials and structures. The advantage of finite element analysis over analytical solutions is that stress and electrical field measurements of complex geometries, and their variations throughout the device, are more readily calculated. FEM allows calculation of the stress and electric field distributions under static loads and under any applied electrical frequency, and so the effect of device geometry can be assessed and optimized without the need to manufacture and test numerous devices. Coupled field analysis taking both mechanical motions and electrical characteristics into account should all be employed to provide a systemic overview of the piezoelectric sensors/actuators (even arrays of them) and the host structures. This use of PWAS for SHM has followed two main paths: (a). Wave propagation (b). Electromechanical impedance; Previous research has shown that PWAS can detect damage using wave reflections, changes in wave signature, or changes in the electromechanical (E/M) impedance spectrum. The primary goal of this paper is to investigate the use of finite element method (FEM) to simulate various SHM methods with PWAS. For the simulation of Electro-mechanical (E/M) impedance technique, simple models, like free PWAS of different shapes and 1-dimmension beam with PWAS are investigated and the simulated structural E/M impedance was presented. For the wave propagation SHM technique, a long beam with several PWAS installed was studied. One PWAS is excited by tone burst signals and elastic wave will propagate along the beam. The existence of a crack will affect the structure integrity and the echo reflected by crack can be observed through the simulations. By using the coupled field elements, direct simulation of electro-mechanical interaction of the PWAS and the host structure was made possible. The electrical potential generated on the PWAS surface by the stimulation of elastic wave can be examined in our FEM analysis. The simulation results are then compared to analytical calculation and experimental data.

Phased array can interrogate large structural areas from a single location using ultrasonic guided waves generated by tuned piezoelectric wafer active sensors that are permanently attached (embedded) to the structure. Various array parameters determine the array beamforming and steering characteristics. This paper aims to bring up several one or two dimension array designs and research on their beamforming properties and damage detection performance through both analytical simulation and laboratory experiments. The paper will firstly present the generic guided wave phased array beamforming formulation and explain how the beamforming characteristics are affected by the array parameters such as number of elements, element spacing, and steering angle. Preliminary work of implementing a one dimensional linear phase array is then followed to exemplify how our embedded ultrasonic structural radar (EUSR) scans and detects damage on the plate structures. However, such a linear array has the limitations that it has limited scanning range due to the beamforming directionality deficiency and it can only scan the 0^o~180^o range either in front of or behind it, i.e., it can not tell if the damage is in the positive or negative direction in the polar coordinates. Hence, we proposed several improved array designs including: (1) a miniaturized array using smaller PWAS; (2) an array using rectangular PWAS; (3) a cross-shaped two dimensional array; (4) a L-shaped two dimensional array. Extensive simulation work has been done to explore the beamforming and beamsteering properties of those arrays. Laboratory experiments have also been conducted to testify the arrays damage detection abilities. The results show that the miniaturized array can look into larger area and be used for damage detection of compact specimen with complicated geometry. Signal rectangular PWAS has directional rather than omnidirectional beamforming which resulting in improved beamforming of the phased array using such PWAS. Two dimensional arrays show directional beamforming within full range of 0^o ~ 360^o degrees though having limited working steering angles. We finally end up with discussion and conclusion of the arrays and some expectations for future work.

Nastic structures are capable of three dimensional shape change using biological principles borrowed from plant motion. The plant motor cells increase or decrease in size through a change in osmotic pressure. When nonuniform cell swelling occurs, it causes the plant tissue to warp and change shape, resulting it net movement, known as nastic motion, which is the same phenomena that causes plants to angle their broad leaf and flower surfaces to face light sources. The nastic structures considered in this paper are composed of a bilayer of microactuator arrays with a fluid reservoir in between the two layers. The actuators are housed in a thin plate and expand when water from the fluid reservoir is pumped into the actuation chamber through a phospholipid bilayer with embedded active transport proteins, which move the water from the low pressure fluid reservoir into a high pressure actuation chamber. Increasing water pressure inside the actuator causes lateral expansion and axial bulging, and the non-uniform net volume change of actuators throughout the nastic structure results in twisting or bending shape change. Modifying the actuation displacement allows controlled volume change. This paper presents an analytical model of the driving and blocking forces involved in actuation, as well as stress and strain that occurs due to the pressure changes. Actuation is driven by increasing osmotic pressure, and blocking forces are taken into consideration to plan actuator response so that outside forces do not counteract the displacement of actuation. Nastic structures are designed with use in unmanned aerial vehicles in mind, so blocking forces are modeled to be similar to in-flight conditions. Stress in the system is modeled so that any residual strain or lasting deformation can be determined, as well as a lifespan before failure from repeated actuation. The long-term aim of our work is to determine the power and energy efficiency of nastic structures actuation mechanism.

Since today's aging fleet is intended to far exceed their proposed design life, monitoring the structural integrity of those aircraft has become a priority issue for today's Air Force. One of the most critical structural problems is corrosion. In fact the KC-135 now costs $1.2 billion a year to repair corrosion. In this paper, we plan to show the use of Lamb waves to detect material loss in thin plates representative of aircraft skins. To do this we will use embedded transducers called Piezoelectric Wafer Active Sensor (PWAS) in a pitch-catch configuration. The sensors were placed on a grid pattern. Material loss through corrosion was simulated by removing the material mechanically with an abrasive tool. Thus, simulated corrosion pits of various depths and area coverage were made. Three-count tone burst wave packets were used. The Lamb wave packets were sent in a pitch-catch mode from one transmitter PWAS to the other PWAS in the grid acting as receivers. The Lamb wave mode used in these experiments was A₁, since this was found to be more sensitive to changes due to material loss. At the frequencies considered in our experiments, the A₁ waves are highly dispersive. It was found that, as the Lamb wave travels through simulated corrosion damage, the signal changes. The observed changes were in the signal wavelength (due to change in the dispersive properties of the medium) and in signal amplitude (due to redistribution of energy in the wave packet). This change in signal can be correlated to the magnitude of damage. To achieve this, we have used several approaches: (a) direct correlation between the sent and the received signals; (b) wavelet transform of the signal followed by correlation of the wavelet coefficients time-frequency maps; (c) Hilbert transform of the signal to produce the signal envelope and comparison of the resulting envelope signals (d) neural network correlation between the sent and received signals. It was found that these methods work well together in a complementary way.

The emerging electro-mechanical impedance technology has high potential for in-situ health monitoring and NDE of structural systems and complex machinery. At first, the fundamental principles of the electro-mechanical impedance method are briefly reviewed and ways for practical implementation are highlighted. The equations of piezo- electric material response are given, and the coupled electro-mechanical impedance of a piezo-electric wafer transducer as affixed to the monitored structure is discussed. Due to the high frequency operation of this NDE method, wave propagation phenomena are identified as the primary coupling method between the structural substrate and the piezo-electric wafer transducer. Attention is then focused on several recent advancements that have extended the electro-mechanical impedance method into new areas of applications and/or have developed its underlying principles. US Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratory used the electro-mechanical impedance method to monitor damage development in composite overlaid civil infrastructure specimens under full-scale static testing. A simplified E/M impedance measuring technique was employed at the Polytechnic University of Madrid, Spain, to detect damage in GFRP composite specimens. The development of miniaturized `bare-bones' impedance analyzer equipment that could be easily packaged into transponder-size dimensions is being studied at the University of South Carolina. US Army Research Laboratory developed novel piezo-composite film transducers for embedment into composite structures. Disbond gauges for monitoring the structural joints of adhesively bonded rotor blades have been studies in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of South Carolina. These recent developments accentuate the importance and benefits of using the electro-mechanical impedance method for on-line health monitoring and damage detection in a variety of applications. Further investigation of the electro-mechanical impedance method is warranted. A further examination of the complex interaction between wave propagation, drive-point impedance, structural damage and electro-mechanical impedance of the piezo-electric wafer transducer is needed. Once these aspects are better understood, the E/M impedance method has the potential to become a widely used NDE technique with large applicability in diverse engineering fields (aerospace, automotive, infrastructure and biomedical implants).

Induced-strain materials can produce very large forces and, hence, large energy density, but small actual displacements. A new concept for obtaining large-amplitude rotary displacements from small linear displacements generated by induced-strain material stacks is proposed. The concept utilizes the theory of twist-warping coupling in thin-wall open tubes. The theory of the proposed solid-state axial-to- rotary converter-amplifier, together with the appropriate bibliographical references, is given. A simple formula is generated for estimating the axial-to-rotary conversion- amplification coefficient from the geometrical length, L, and enclosed area, A, of the open tube. A large-displacement induced-strain rotary (LARIS) actuator proof-of-concept demonstrator was built and tested to verify and validate the theoretical developments. The LARIS actuator consisted of a 28 mm diameter, 1.2 m length open tube and a 120 micrometer, -1000 V PZT translator. The experimental set-up and the excitation and measuring equipment are fully described in the paper. A maximum rotary displacement of 8 degrees was measured, and the linear relationship between the rotation coefficient, the tube length, L, and the inverse of the enclosed area, A, was verified. An improved theoretical model, that accounts for the experimentally observed zero off-set, is also given. The theoretical developments and experimental tests presented in this paper show that the proposed LARIS actuator, based on a novel solid-state axial-to-rotary converter-amplifier utilizing the warping-torsion coupling of an open tube, is a viable design option, of great constructive simplicity and very low parts count. This concept can be successfully used in a series of aerospace and mechanical engineering applications, as for example in the actuation of adaptive control surfaces for aircraft wings and helicopter blades. The 8 degree rotary displacement capabilities measured on the proof-of-concept demonstrator can be easily scaled to other values to meet the operation requirements of specific applications. For very large angles (40 - 50 degrees), conventional electromechanical actuators (e.g., stepper-motors and ball-screws assemblies) can used.

This paper presents the work we have done on a health monitoring technique called active non-destructive evaluation (ANDE) for detecting delaminations in full-scale C-channel structural elements of glass-fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) composites using active ferromagnetic tagging. Conventional non-destructive evaluation methods are not very effective in monitoring the material conditions of GFRP composite and adhesive joints. A technology that has been proposed to enhance inspection of such non-conductive and non-magnetic GFRP composites is the particle tagging technique. This technique, previously demonstrated on small scale laboratory samples is being developed for full-scale C-channel composite elements. This technique relies on comparing changes in local-area mechanical properties of the structure to identify delaminations. Unlike conventional passive tagging NDE inspection, our technique uses an electromagnetic exciter to interrogate tagged composites over a broad frequency range. As the vibration excitation approaches the resonant frequency of the area of the disbondment, the response amplitude obtained for a given force input increases. Therefore, at frequencies around the transverse resonance of the layer above a defect, the response for a given force will be greater than the response in flawless regions of the structure. Thus, the ANDE test may be based on response measurements alone. The technique is most sensitive if excitation is applied at the plate resonant frequency. Since this frequency is dependent on defect size and depth, a broad band of frequencies must be covered. A laser Doppler vibrometer is a high-sensitivity, high-speed and non-contacting instrument used for detecting surface vibrations. The frequency response curves are obtained using a fast Fourier transform signal processor. An algorithm based on training a neural network to detect significant differences between healthy and damaged structures is then applied to recognize delaminations in full scale structural elements. This method provides the fundamental technology needed for developing a commercial system to monitor the integrity of composite structures, both during manufacturing and during their lifetime as structural elements.
